Breast Imaging Division

The Breast Imaging Division within the Department of Radiology offers state-of-the-art comprehensive care in the field of breast imaging. Faculty perform a variety of procedures, including digital mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, sonography (including screening), image-guided breast biopsy, needle and radioactive seed localization, ductography, and breast MRI. Notably, our breast imaging faculty pioneered the development of tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening and diagnosis, making Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC the first site in the country to perform tomosynthesis-directed breast biopsy.

Active areas of research interest currently include the development of new technologies and novel screening solutions. Currently, both screening and diagnostic services are provided to nine locations across Allegheny County, including Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC St. Margaret hospital, UPMC Passavant Cranberry, UPMC McKeesport hospital, and the UPMC imaging centers located in Wexford, Bethel Park, Monroeville and Pleasant Hills. Over the past year, Breast Imaging expanded locally with the addition of screening interpretations for patients of UPMC Bedford Memorial hospital and diagnostic interpretations and management at UPMC Jameson hospital.

The program’s personalized screening paradigm ensures that based on age, personal risk of breast cancer and breast density that the optimum combination of screening exams is offered to every patient. This is the first comprehensive personalized screening program in the area.

Ongoing program development includes: an enterprise-wide physician quality peer committee for breast imaging, the development of a robust quality assurance program for technologists, and the continuous development of multiple patient informational brochures, which are intended to promote patient participation in shared decision making regarding their breast health.
